The easiest way to figure out whether your employees are engaged or whether they dread coming to the office each day is by asking them directly.

Unfortunately, you simply can’t ask each employee whether they’re engaged during your routine 1:1 meetings. You have to assume at least some members of your team are shier and more introverted — which means they’re less likely to be brutally honest if for no other reason than they want to avoid an awkward social situation.

Pulse surveys are a great way to overcome this obstacle. While many managers think that employee engagement surveys need to focus exclusively on asking serious questions, there’s no rule that says you can’t have a little fun.


To this end, in order to increase engagement and get better results from your pulse surveys, you may want to consider adding some fun and frivolous questions into the mix. Not only can lightening things up improve employee happiness, the answers to these quirky questions can be great for team-building purposes.

Our previous research found that peers are the number one driver of workplace satisfaction. By asking employees lighthearted ice-breaker questions, you give them a chance to share some details from their private lives while getting to know their colleagues a little bit better.

This is important because employees might spend more time with each other than with their families. So it pays off to get to know one another — especially considering the fact that only 24% of workers feel connected to their peers, a stat we uncovered in our 2017 Employee Engagement Report.

Of course, you might not want to ask funny and unrelated questions in every engagement survey you send out. But if you ask the right questions at the right time, most employees will be happy to share.

Whatever questions you end up choosing, keep them light and be sure to share the results with your team. At the very least, you should get some good conversation and some laughs while building at least a little bit more camaraderie.

Keep this up for a while, and over the long term, employees will discover more and more about each other — creating those unbreakable bonds that make work fun.
